Autopolis 2009
Manage intense tire degradation on this remote, highly technical Japanese mountain track.
Track Intelligence
Built directly into the remote, volcanic mountains of Japan, Autopolis features massive elevation changes, blind crests, and an incredibly abrasive tarmac surface. The track demands excellent aerodynamic stability for the high-speed sweepers in the first half of the lap, but the relentless, tight, twisting complex of the final sector overheats the tires incredibly rapidly.
This layout forces drivers into a severe tire-management battle. They must balance a highly aggressive, slip-angle-heavy qualifying pace with incredibly smooth, patient inputs during the race. Fighting severe mid-corner understeer as the front tires inevitably fall off is the defining characteristic of a long stint at this unforgiving venue.
